Boogie Nights at Tropicana, a Solid 70’s & 80’s Dance Club Mix

by Joe Molineaux

Boogie Nights opened with all the excitement and style defining the dance generations that inspired the club.  The moment you enter,  you can see, hear, and feel the blend of two decades that helped perfect musical beats and dance moves.

Saturday’s opening night event was a high energy celebration that included seventies television star and comedian Jimmie “JJ” Walker, a live performance by eighties teen pop star Tiffany along with a highly interactive rendition of Y.M.C.A. from the center of the dance floor by none other than the Village People’s original cowboy Randy Jones.  Dave Pena, the club’s owner, Tropicana president Tony Rodio (both in full seventies period suits), along with staff sporting costumes spanning both decades kept the crowd moving and shaking to familiar songs all night long.  Look for a calendar full of upcoming weekend events that spotlight the “dance decades” while providing all the amenities to serve the club goers of today.

Boogie Nights’ new location, while reminiscent of its previous space, is bigger and better than before.  You can see familiar elements included in the design with additional new features that allow for greater flow and movement through the club as well as on and off the dance floor.  There are VIP themed areas, plenty of comfortable spaces, along with multiple video monitors, to view the action on the dance floor.  You will also want to check out the eighties excess inspired “Solid Gold Room.”  Throughout Boogie Nights the colors, lighting, and excellent sound system are both esthetically and audibly well-balanced.

Whether you are revisiting your past or just looking for a night of retro sights and danceable sounds, Boogie Nights, in its new home at Tropicana, Atlantic City may be exactly where you will want to be Friday or Saturday nights.  The design and décor, combining elements of both the seventies Disco era and the eighties New Wave Dance Club scene, provide a unique experience for singles, couples and groups of nightlife seekers to “Do AC” retro-style.

$617,524 Bad Beat Jackpot Hit at Borgata Poker Room

Atlantic City, NJ (April 27, 2012) – Within a span of less than four hours yesterday, two tables experienced the ‘joy’ of defeat as losing poker hands netted them a combined $617,524 at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. In the past 60 days Borgata has given away an astounding $1.4 million in Bad Beat Jackpot winnings.

At approximately 3PM on Tuesday afternoon, Marlton, NJ native David Henry suffered a brutal loss in a hand where his quad 10′s were bested by Virginian William Warner’s quad aces. Fortunately for David (and the rest of the table), his loss was also their substantial gain, as his hand qualified for Borgata’s HIGH Bad Beat Jackpot; set at $567,524. David was awarded $227,009 while the ‘winner’ of the hand took home the pot plus $113,505. The remaining seven players at the table left with $32,430 each. Henry’s win came mere hours after Joseph Rispoli of New Cumberland, WV won the LOW Bad Beat, walking away with over $20,000 in winnings as his quad 7′s were upended by Steven Signorello’s straight flush, which gave him the pot plus $10,000.

Over the past two months alone, the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot has hit seven times for $1,404,235, including its largest single-day jackpot of $636,711 in which Chong In Yan of Bala Cynwyd, PA saw his losing hand – a jack-high straight flush – win him $234,685.

Since its inception in December of 2008, Borgata’s Bad Beat program has hit 107 times for $13,256,910.

The Bad Beat jackpot immediately reset to $100,000

About Bad Beat
The Bad Beat shall apply to the game of Texas Hold’Em only. “Bad Beat” means a high ranking poker hand that is beat by a higher ranking hand (e.g., Four Deuces losing to Four Nines). In order for a hand to be eligible to qualify for a Bad Beat, the pot must meet a minimum of $20. A minimum of four players must be seated and dealt in at the beginning of the hand in order to qualify for the Bad Beat. To qualify for the Bad Beat Jackpot, a player must have four Deuces or better beaten. If the winning or losing player has made a Four-of-a-Kind, that player must have a pocket pair to qualify (example: if a player has four Eights, he/she must have a pocket pair of Eights with two Eights on the board). Both the winning and losing hands must use both of their hole cards to create the highest possible hand.
***Four Tens or better beaten wins the HIGH Bad Beat Jackpot amount. Four Deuces to Four Nines beaten wins the LOW Bad Beat Jackpot amount.

Golden Nugget Celebrates Grand Reopening, a Sparkling Addition to Atlantic City

By Harriet Diamond

As you pull up to the front of the Golden Nugget to valet park, you are surrounded by, appropriately, much gold.  The ceiling of the porte de cochere is decorated with golden nuggets; gold, silver, and red metal balls adorn the area.  Paintings that reflect the color scheme face you as you approach the building.

The bright, fanciful color scheme welcomes you as you take the escalator to the lobby level.  This reinvented property is both exciting and charming.

During the Grand Reopening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Executive Vice President and General Manager Tom Pohlman welcomed throngs of well-wishers and guests to the new Golden Nugget Atlantic City.  He thanked patrons for visiting during the transformation and the related inconveniences, proudly announcing, “transformation complete.”  Complete it is!  New designs, new colors, and new energy pervade.  Tilman Fertitta, founder, president, and ceo of Landry’s, owner of the property, told visitors that he’s always loved Atlantic City and its proximity to New York and Pennsylvania.  A standard bearer for Atlantic City’s revitalization, he stressed that he’s in AC for the long haul:  “I’m not a flipper; I’m a buyer.”  Fertitta commented that he always envisioned redesigning “the box” that was the early marina property.  He saw it as a “blank mat with endless possibilities.”  His early vision is the beauty that is now The Golden Nugget, a mixed palette of color, texture, and function.  Tracy Danielle, of Choose NJ, representing Governor Christie, gave a warm thank you to the whole Landry team for choosing New Jersey and being able to execute their vision.

On display was a cake replica of the Golden Nugget, created by the Cake Boss, complete with Fertitta’s yacht and helicopter.  A beautiful, all female string quartet serenaded the crowd, Fertitta uncorked champagne, cut the gold ribbon with gold scissors, and cut into the cake with a gold knife.  Other features of the ceremony were the unveiling of a 62 pound gold nugget and the introduction of a gold ATM machine.  Not a machine made of gold, but one that dispenses it, for cash, of course.

The casino is predominantly decorated in bright red and gold; however, warm berry and silver periodically surface.  This open area is welcoming to slot and table players alike.  The table games are front and center, adjacent to the 46 Bar, a cozy respite, with surprising light-up menus that are a feast for the eyes in the soft, dim lighting.   On the other side of the bar is the Poker Room, apart, yet open and welcoming.

Bring your appetite to the Golden Nugget.  Restaurants include Lillie’s, Asian cuisine, with noodle and sushi bars as well as other mouth-watering dishes; the Grotto, with a full Italian menu and a signature thin crust pizza; the famous Chart House (its 30th location), with a panoramic bay view to complement every diner’s experience, and Vic and Anthony’s, named for Tilman Fertitta’s father and uncle and adorned with family photos.  Another eatery with a family inspired name is Michael Patricks, the easy go-to just outside the sumptuous, but not overwhelming, Buffet on the lobby level. Like everything else at the Golden Nugget, it is just right.  Each restaurant is decorated to create a unique experience, with its own color scheme, textures, and lighting brand.

The Golden Nugget has seven bar areas:  the 46 Bar, the Rush Lounge and the Live Bar that offer live music, the Wine and Wifi for the constant communicator, the pool bar, and, of course, the restaurant bars at Vic and Anthony’s and The Chart House.  Each has its own color scheme, and personality.  High rollers have their sanctuary at the 24 Karat Club.

The Showroom is a welcoming venue that seats 450.  It is designed as a comfortable theatre, rather than one with long tables.  “Every seat is up front.”  The Grand, a 16,920 square foot ballroom showcases top entertainers and breaks down for smaller events.

The Ronnie Wood Art Gallery is a welcome addition to the Atlantic City scene.  The former Rolling Stones’ member still wields his guitar as well as his paintbrush.  Woods launched the Golden Nugget’s unveiling the weekend before the Grand Opening.  The Gallery includes his paintings, drawings, and limited editions depicting stars from throughout his life.

Retail row includes a mix of Las Vegas shoppers’ favorites such as Style & Trend, Nineteen Forty Six, and d’Oro, as well as new names such as Tint, Flirt,  and Cool Jeans.  Don’t’ miss Chocolate Box, a Landry’s signature store, opposite a display of mouth-watering chocolate flowing into giant golden nuggets.  Bean and Bread is a convenient and appealing grab and go market.

Planning on staying?  Check-in is welcoming and easy with ipads at the front desk.

Different room areas offer color schemes to create the experience promised, from the tasteful white and muted Spa Suites to the colorful H20 Suites.   The latter are on the pool level and have verandas adjacent to the pool.  Unbelievable!

Ah, the pool.  This area has a bar, four hot tubs, and surprise features in a class of their own.

The Spa and Salon will round out any visit or become a featured destination on its own.  The warmth and comfort surround you before you even walk through the door.  Again, color and lighting do their magic.

An outdoor rooftop area has been covered with turf.  Guests will be invited to bring lawn chairs for fireworks displays and other events will use this creative space.

A slogan that flashed across the screen during the opening was “Everything Gold is New Again.”  And so it is.  I can only say so much.
