I’m the last one to tell someone not to come down here, especially on a holiday weekend. But Hurricane Earl is about to attack the Outer Banks of North Carolina and then head north.

The current forecast calls for Earl to pass just east of Atlantic City. At the very least, it will churn up a bunch of waves, and chances are the lifeguards won’t let y0u in the water – at least not more than knee deep -  until Sunday. But if it moves to the west just a little bit, the New Jersey shore could be socked with rain and high winds. The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for the area.

I’d suggest you check the forecast before you head to the shore, especially if you plan to come on Friday. You could be driving in a heavy downpour – or not. Saturday should be good for travel, and the weather is supposed to be nice for the weekend, even if you may not be able to swim in the ocean. That’s why God put up the casinos.

But here’s the good news. Atlantic City’s beach season doesn’t end on Labor Day. The lifeguards are on duty every day through Sept. 19. The water is still warm and you won’t have to compete for a space to park your blanket on the beach. September is Atlantic City’s best-kept secret, but word is getting out.
