Resorts Atlantic City Launches myresortscasino.com

Posted by: Matt Bourie  :  Category: Atlantic City Casinos, Resorts Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – May 29, 2009 – Months after making its foray into Facebook, the wildly popular social networking site, Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City announced that it’s launching its own social online community, a site titled myresortscasino.com. Resorts is first among its competitors to create a customized site that takes interactivity and social networking to the next level.

“As discussed at the Gaming Expo held earlier this month in Atlantic City, Social Networking is the future of communication. Recognizing this evolution, we are taking an industry lead in a new communication vehicle,” said Kathleen McSweeney, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Resorts. “Staying ahead of business trends–especially cutting-edge ones–is the approach we need to take in today’s market. Offering more ways for our guests to take an active role in the goings-on at Resorts engages them and lets them know we value their feedback and opinion. Many others are on Facebook and Twitter, but we saw an opportunity to take things to the next level.”

Myresortscasino.com seamlessly integrates with the aforementioned social sites. But these sites will all link to myresortscasino.com, and therein lies the difference. The site is customized and completely interactive. Rather than static web pages, myresortscasino.com allows existing customers to join discussion groups, comment on blogs, upload video and participate in other enhanced activities. For example, if a customer is a fan of Resorts’ restaurants, he or she can create or join a group to discuss the dining scene at Resorts with other foodies. Those who frequent Boogie Nights can upload photos of themselves with friends and the Boogie Nights characters, as well as comments chronicling their experiences at the Atlantic City hotspot.

New and potential customers can learn about Resorts from people who experience first-hand all that the casino has to offer. They can watch uploaded video and read blogs and discussions as a way to virtually visit the casino before physically arriving.

“Myresortscasino.com is a site for sharing your experiences at Resorts, and for learning about other people’s experiences,” said McSweeney. “And there’s no stronger way of advertising than true testimonial, word-of-mouth messaging. And that’s exactly what this site provides.”

In addition to commenting, discussing and sharing photos and videos, visitors to myresortscasino.com will be the first to find out about special offers and coupons and the latest entertainment updates. As a bonus, there is a contest to kick off the launch of the site. The member who invites the most friends by June 12, 2009 will win a complimentary dinner for two at Resorts’ new Beachball Seafood House and free admission for two to its Boogie Nights 70s and 80s Dance Club.

To join this social networking site, participants should visit www.myresortscasino.com and complete the brief entry fields. Participants are also encouraged to follow Resorts on twitter at www.twitter.com/resortscasino and find Resorts on Facebook.

Summer Bargains in Atlantic City and Vicinity

Posted by: Cory Nelson  :  Category: ACES Train Service, Atlantic City restaurants

Just because it’s past Memorial Day doesn’t mean you can’t get good deals getting to Atlantic City and having fun once you’re here.

First of all, it will be cheaper to get here on the ACES train from New York and Newark. The one-way fare from New York will be $29 on all trains from June 1 through July 5. It’s still a little pricier than the Greyhound bus, but it’s a lot more comfortable.

And once you’re here, you’ll have to eat. A few area restaurants are offering incentives for you to pick their establishment over the competition.

Starting June 1, The Palm in The Quarter at the Tropicana is offering a lobster dinner for two for $90. It comes with a 4-pound Nova Scotia lobster, choice of salad for each person and a shared side dish. It’s a nice and affordable way to celebrate a romantic occasion or a big score in the casinos. The promotion runs all summer long.

If you’re willing to leave Atlantic City and head south to Cape May County, Ocean City and Cape May are holding restaurant weeks. They’re capitalizing on the success of the Atlantic City event in early March.

Ocean City’s extravaganza starts today and runs for 11 days. There are 34 participating eateries, offering a three-course lunch for $10.09 and a dinner for $20.09. Kids can eat for $5.99. Ocean City is a dry town, so you can’t have wine or beer with your dinner, and you’re not allowed to bring your own, but the deals are good. Log on to www.eatinOCNJ.com for details.

Cape May is a little fancier, and further from Atlantic City. More than 50 restaurants are in on the deal to offer three-course dinners for a maximum price of $35.09 per person. Casual eateries will offer $22.09 dinners. This starts Sunday and runs through June 7. Logon to www.cmrestaurantweek.com for details.

It’s Summer in Atlantic City!

The Memorial Day weekend has started, and cars are streaming into town. That means crowded casinos, lots of people on the boardwalk and the beach bars are open. The ocean is still pretty cold, but should warm up in another month or so. Don’t forget to take a dip while you’re in town.

In general news, a state senator and former Atlantic City mayor is talking about easing restrictions on gaming in Atlantic City. One thing he’s suggesting is allowing casino-hotels with as few as 250 or 300 rooms. Some fear the “boutique casinos” could lend a cheesy feeling to Atlantic City, while others like the idea. Some of my favorite places in Vegas are the smaller ones, so I’m in favor of it as long as there are standards to make sure they don’t turn into grind joints.

Caesars is having another promotion next weekend, and it appears to be a good one. Play May 29 and 30 and earn gift cards to Brookstone. Conveniently, you can spend them in the store on the Pier at Caesars. From the signs I saw on the property last weekend, the deal is pretty good. Earn just 100 base Total Rewards credits, and get a $25 gift card. Earn 250 credits for a $50 card, and so forth. It’s an easy way to earn a gift for dad or grad, or maybe a treat for yourself.

CHEF STEPHEN KALT TO OPEN FORNELLETTO AT BORGATA

Posted by: Matt Bourie  :  Category: Atlantic City Casinos, Atlantic City restaurants, The Borgata

Atlantic City, NJ (May 20, 2009) – Celebrated chef Stephen Kalt will join Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa’s roster of acclaimed culinary talent with the summer 2009 opening of his Italian restaurant concept, Fornelletto. Further strengthening Borgata’s position as a leading dining destination on the East Coast, Fornelletto will combine the experience of both an enoteca and an osteria, offering traditional, regional Italian fare prepared with only the finest, freshest ingredients, a hallmark of Kalt’s cuisine. Fornelletto will appeal to a broad range of tastes by offering an array of dining options from quick casual bites to relaxed, multi-course meals, all served in a lively, inviting atmosphere. Adjacent to Fornelletto, Kalt will also open Roma, a fast-casual café offering pizzas, pastas and panini, that places the same emphasis on top-quality ingredients and service.

Bringing more than 30 years of experience to Borgata, Kalt has received critical acclaim for his culinary concepts throughout the country. In 2004, Kalt was tapped to be Executive Chef of Wynn Las Vegas restaurant, Corsa Cucina where he received acclaim for his Mediterranean-inflected modern Italian menu. Prior to opening his celebrated restaurant at Wynn, Kalt garnered national recognition as the co-creator and chef of the celebrated Mediterranean restaurant Spartina in New York City. During its reign, Spartina was named “Top 5 Neighborhood Restaurants in New York” by Food & Wine magazine and earned two stars from the New York Times.

“I received much of my culinary education working in some of the greatest kitchens on the East Coast, and I am excited to return with the opening of Fornelletto,” said Kalt, Chef/Partner of Fornelletto. “Borgata has become a true culinary destination within Atlantic City and I look forward to adding Fornelletto to the property’s esteemed Restaurant Collection.”

Kalt’s menu at Fornelletto is inspired by his time living in and traveling throughout Italy. With traditional, regionally influenced cuisine, Fornelletto will offer simply prepared dishes that use only the finest ingredients. The menu will also highlight Neapolitan specialties that are rooted in bold flavors and locally sourced products. Guests with more adventurous palates looking to explore new flavor profiles can enjoy Kalt’s inspired use of rare ingredients such as Mangalista pigs and sea beans grown in Oregon. While the menu is comprised of authentic Italian specialties, Kalt will also offer some traditional Italian-American options that are guaranteed to be crowd pleasers.

Highlights of Fornelletto’s menu include a fresh Mozzarella Bar serving flavorful varieties of handmade mozzarella paired with salumi and fresh sautéed vegetables; chilled and hot antipastas; a variety of Sfusi such as Aroncini with Veal ragu; Neapolitan pizzas including the Prosciutto di Parma with fresh Arugula; signature house-made pasta dishes like the Neopolitan Carbonara with Spaghetti, Bacon and Fried Hen’s Egg; fresh Pesce options such as Diver Scallops with Grilled Radicchio and Pancetta; and perfectly prepared Carne selections, including the 16 Hour Lamb with Pencil Asparagus, Sea Beans, Polenta and Mint Sugo.

Kalt will work closely with Borgata’s Executive Pastry Chef Thaddeus Dubois, who previously served as the former White House Pastry Chef. Together, they will create homemade gelati and sorbets along with other traditional Italian desserts including Fresh Peach Crostata, Bombolino filled with Chocolate Pastry Cream and Raspberry Jam, and the ever-popular Tiramisu. Kalt will also collaborate with Anjoleena Griffin-Holst, the property’s Wine Director, to incorporate a selection of regionally-based wines that also maintain a great commitment to value. Fornelletto’s wine list will feature a “50 Under $50” section, reflecting the restaurant’s desire to accommodate all guests’ palates and price points, whether ordering wine by the glass, cortinos or full bottles.

Roma, the restaurant’s café concept, will serve thin-crust Neapolitan pizza, handmade pasta, perfectly grilled Panini, fresh salads, aromatic espresso and delicious Italian pastries. Roma will remain open from breakfast until late at night, welcoming diners throughout the day. While Roma is meant for diners on-the-go, every item on the menu will be prepared with the same high quality ingredients as at Fornelletto. Many of these ingredients, such as hand-turned artichokes, are not typically found in more casual restaurants.

Kalt will join Borgata’s stellar roster of chefs and restaurants including Wolfgang Puck (Wolfgang Puck American Grille), Bobby Flay (Bobby Flay Steak), Michael Mina (SeaBlue, A Michael Mina Restaurant), Michael Schulson (Izakaya – A Modern Japanese Pub), Geoffrey Zakarian (The Water Club by Borgata) and restaurateurs Marc and Greg Sherry (Old Homestead Steak House). Fornelletto and Roma will be the sole Italian properties in the Restaurant Collection.

Math Challenged in Atlantic City

Posted by: Cory Nelson  :  Category: Atlantic City Gambling, Video Poker

The New Jersey Lottery’s Pick-6 jackpot is up to $20 million. So I decided to take part of my lunch hour to walk a half-mile or so to the store, get some exercise on a nice spring day and buy a ticket.

OK, I know the lottery isn’t the best bet. But with the jackpot at $20 million and the odds against hitting it about 9 million-to-1, I figured it’s a fair bet, even though the odds against hitting are astronomical. Besides, I get some enjoyment daydreaming about what I’d do with that kind of money. Throw my own farewell party for the job and not invite the bosses, switch from quarter to dollar video poker and get treated like royalty, help out some worthy causes. But I digress.

I went into the store, and the man in front of me in line was steaming up the lottery machine big time. He handed the clerk a big stack of old tickets to duplicate, and a couple of cards with his Pick 6 numbers on them. All told, he spent $89 on lottery tickets.

I exchanged glances with the man in line behind me.

“Oh well,” he said. “You can go to the casinos and lose $500 in one night, so why not do this?”

I said that New Jersey law requires the slot machines in Atlantic City to pay back 83 percent of the money wagered, and most pay about 90 percent. On the other hand, the lottery keeps a full 50 percent of its bets. I didn’t even get into the fact that a skilled blackjack or video-poker player can cut the house advantage to half a percent.

“Oh, you know all the numbers,” he said.

I bought my one ticket, picked up my lunch at another shop, and headed back to work.

On the walk back, I started thinking. This man in front of me must spend $89 on lottery tickets more than once a week. If he took that money to the casinos, he could play penny slots at 20-25 cents a spin and get several hours of entertainment out of it. On top of that, he would get all the free drinks he wanted. If he used a slot-club card, he might get a comped lunch out of the deal, and would certainly start getting offers in the mail. But he preferred to play the lottery.

But then, the same is true for casino patrons who play 6/5 Jacks or Better when there are 9/6 machines a few rows down. Or people who play blackjack games that pay 6-to-5 for a natural, when others pay 3-to-2.

At a seminar he gave a few years ago at the Borgata, Bob Dancer said it helps to be a math geek to be a winning video-poker player. I can see why. You don’t have to be a geek, but you do have to understand basic probability theory if you don’t want to get fleeced.

Fortunately for the casino industry and the state lottery, most Americans are math challenged. Otherwise, they’d never make money.

Now bone up on probability theory and don’t be one of their victims.

Atlantic City Casinos Running Scared

Posted by: Cory Nelson  :  Category: Atlantic City Casinos

As some of you may know, the Delaware legislature voted last week to legalize sports betting in its racinos. The governor signed the legislation, and they say the sports books should be up and running in about three months. Delaware also said it plans to allow table games in the near future.

Good news for people who want to bet on sports, and do it legally. But some professional sports leagues have said they will try and stop it. It’s also good news for people who want to gamble in a smoke-free environment, as Delaware casinos forbid smoking by state law.

But it’s bad news for Atlantic City casinos, with revenues still spiraling downwards due to a recession and new competition in Pennsylvania. Sports betting and table games in Delaware will eat into Atlantic City’s customer base, and casino execs are running scared.

New Jersey blew its chance to allow sports betting back in 1993. The U.S. Congress passed a law that any state that did not allow sports betting by the end of 1993 could never have it. Nevada, of course, already had its sports books. Delaware and two other states were grandfathered in, because they had conducted some sort of sports lottery.

In order to become legal in New Jersey, the sports-betting question had to be placed on the ballot in the November 1993 election. The legislature, then controlled by the Republicans, did not act, and the window of opportunity was forever closed.

Now the state is talking about suing the federal government, saying the 1993 law is unconstitutional. Good luck! Even if they win in the long run, it will take years to work its way through the courts. In the meantime, the Delaware sports books will prosper.

If you ask my opinion, Atlantic City’s only hope is to clean itself up, both physically and politically, to make itself a desirable resort destination. Clean up the trash, clean up the slums, and for God’s sake, clean up City Hall. Two years ago, when fully one-third of the City Council went to prison for taking bribes, it made it clear to honest entrepreneurs that Atlantic City is not a place they want to do business. Get the crooks out of City Hall and make Atlantic City a good place to invest.
